Japan Steel Works to Begin Local Production of AMV-XP Armored Personnel Carrier in September

According to a report by the military news site ‘Breaking Defense’, a 20-person team from Japan Steel Works has completed a five-month training program in Finland. Upon returning to Japan, they will start assembling the AMV-XP 8×8 wheeled armored personnel carrier, authorized by Patria, as part of Japan's new generation of armored forces for the Ground Self-Defense Force.

Earlier, the team successfully assembled the first AMV-XP for the GSDF in January, completing testing and verification before its return to Japan. Patria is currently preparing the necessary materials and equipment for Japan, while also providing technical support to ensure that Japan Steel Works can begin assembly as scheduled in September.

Japan announced in 2022 that the AMV-XP would replace the active-duty Type 96 armored personnel carrier, and Patria plans to collaborate with Japan Steel Works to deliver several hundred AMV-XP units to the GSDF over the coming years. Additionally, Japan Steel Works is actively building a local parts supply chain to enhance its autonomy in vehicle production and maintenance.

Patria also participated in the recent DSEI Japan exhibition, showcasing various products and services in hopes of expanding cooperation with Japan.
