Finland's Baana 25 Exercise: Enhancing Readiness and Force Preservation through Runway Operations

The Finnish Air Force conducted the 'Baana 25' runway operation exercise from September 26 to 29, with the Royal Netherlands Air Force participating for the first time using F-35A fighter jets. The exercise aimed to strengthen interoperability among allied countries and validate concepts of wartime evacuation and force preservation. The exercise site was E75 highway in Tikkakoski, with over 20 allied aircraft and nearly 2,000 personnel involved.
Reports indicate that the Dutch F-35As arrived on September 28 from the Pirkkala airbase, located 180 kilometers southwest of Tikkakoski. Although only conducting a 'touch-and-go' maneuver without actual landing and takeoff procedures, the exercise confirmed the feasibility of wartime relocation and evacuation operations, aiding future 'flexible combat deployment' capabilities.
This runway operation is a regular training exercise for the Finnish Air Force, which extended invitations to Norway and the United States to participate with their F-35A aircraft after Finland's accession to NATO. The event not only aims to share operational experiences with allies but also enhances rapid evacuation capabilities in the event of attacks on friendly bases, sustaining air defense strength.
