Polish Presidential Election: Nawrocki Wins by a Narrow Margin

In the presidential runoff held in Poland on the 1st, nationalist historian Nawrocki won with 50.89% of the vote, narrowly defeating pro-EU Warsaw Mayor Sławiński, who garnered 49.11%. This closely contested race underscores the polarized nature of Polish voters, which could impact the nation's future foreign policy direction.

Since no candidate secured a majority in the first round on May 18, the top two candidates faced off in a second round. Supported by the nationalist Law and Justice Party, Nawrocki emerged victorious. According to the Polish Electoral Commission, the turnout for this runoff was 71.31%, a record high.

Nawrocki, born in the Baltic port city of Gdańsk, previously served as the director of the Second World War Museum and led the national memorial research institute investigating Nazi and communist crimes. He supports Poland's continued assistance to Ukraine against Russia, but his political stance aligns closely with that of U.S. President Trump. His campaign slogan was "Poland First, Poles First," advocating for increased defense investment in Europe, stronger self-defense, opposition to Ukraine's NATO membership, anti-immigration policies, and combating gang crime.

Notably, while the first round of voting successfully eliminated far-right candidates, the close electoral outcome reflects domestic societal divisions and may affect Poland’s pro-EU policies. The future direction of foreign policy will be a focal point for observers. President Lai of Taiwan posted congratulations to Nawrocki on social media, emphasizing the importance of Taiwan’s strong friendship with Poland and expressing hopes for new diplomatic milestones through mutual support and shared values of democracy and freedom.
