Lu Hsiu-lien Warns: Typhoon Holidays Could Be an Optimal Time for China's Attack on Taiwan

Chinese leader Xi Jinping continues to crack down on military officials, while National Security Bureau Director Tsai Ming-yen assesses that the likelihood of the People's Liberation Army shifting from drills to actual combat in the short term is low. However, former Vice President Lu Hsiu-lien mentioned in the online program "Chat After Work" that the "South China Morning Post" has warned that July and August are critical periods, particularly fearing that China might choose to launch an attack during typhoon holidays.

Lu emphasized that most wars creep in like sleepwalking, urging young people not to take life lightly. She referred to recent warnings from the "Financial Times" and the "South China Morning Post" indicating that China has developed capabilities to attack Taiwan, having stationed amphibious forces along the coast of Fujian and targeting nearly 40 critical infrastructures in Taiwan. Chinese military vessels have also been frequently navigating the Bashi Channel and the Miyako Strait, and a call to arms could instigate panic in Taiwan.

She analyzed that, while the aforementioned information appears factual, it is provided by the Ministry of National Defense, which she believes has made thorough preparations. Rather, the concern lies with the unpreparedness of the public, especially noting that young people are more worried about the extension of military service from four months to one year. If it is common knowledge that young people in Taiwan fear war, the United States will be less inclined to defend Taiwan, and China may see this as an optimal window for attacking.

Additionally, Lu pointed out that the months of July and August will see significant recall elections, as the public is busy fostering animosity. During the typhoon season, many hope for time off, making the prospect of an attack by China just before the typhoon particularly alarming.

She noted that if the citizens of Taiwan do not take the initiative to protect their own land, expecting aid from the United States is unrealistic, adding that women should also receive military training to enhance national defense awareness. Ultimately, she advocated for investing in peace to avoid war.
