Lai Ching-te's Cross-Strait Acquisition Comments Spark Controversy, Historian Points Out Blind Spots

Lai Ching-te recently stated in an interview that China is a larger company while Taiwan is a smaller company, and if there were to be an acquisition, the conditions should be proposed by China. This statement has sparked widespread debate. Commentator Historian pointed out that proposing conditions for an acquisition implies recognizing Taiwan's sovereignty as something that can be traded, which reflects a 'selling Taiwan' mentality. He emphasized, 'This is the biggest political disaster! Is Taiwan really something that can be traded to China for acquisition?'

Historian Li Yi-shiu criticized this as yet another significant gaffe following Lai's 'Republic of China disaster theory.' He condemned the notion that secondary voices have turned into official statements, hindering more rigorous discussion. He also pointed out that the argument of 'large enterprises (China) acquiring small enterprises (Taiwan)' has two major blind spots: 1. Market rules may directly lower costs, and these may not necessarily be higher than those of an acquisition; 2. The idea that one must propose conditions for acquisition implies that Taiwan's sovereignty is 'tradeable.' He directly stated that those who shout 'Love Taiwan' are actually 'Loving the New Taiwan Dollar.'

KMT legislator Lin Pei-hsiang commented that this is 'democratic selling of Taiwan,' while Historian responded that this is even more exaggerated. Some netizens pointed out that using a corporate analogy for Taiwan is flawed because a chairman cannot veto the decisions of a 60% majority board. Others expressed discontent with comments likening Taiwan to a company, worrying if Lai truly understands the essence of democracy.
