New Surge in COVID-19 in China! Experts Predict Peak Around May

China is witnessing a resurgence in COVID-19 cases. The latest data from the Chinese CDC indicates an increase in the test positivity rate in April, particularly in southern provinces. Expert Li Tongzeng predicts that the current wave of COVID-19 may peak in late May.
Li identifies three main factors contributing to the rise in cases. First, many individuals have not been infected for over six months, leading to a decrease in natural immunity. Second, the virus continues to mutate, especially the Omicron subvariant XDV branch NB.1.8.1, which has a stronger ability to evade immunity. Third, the surge in travel during the May Day holiday has created favorable conditions for the spread of the virus.
In terms of the infection trends across regions, Li noted a decline in positivity rates in some northern areas, while the spread in central regions has also slowed. Although southern regions are still experiencing an upward trend, it is expected that they will reach their peak around late May. Overall, this wave of COVID-19 is anticipated to peak around the end of May, and the public is urged to maintain basic precautions.
