National Science Council Collaborates with Iloilo City, Philippines on Smart Disaster Prevention Technology

The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) has promoted "Smart Disaster Prevention Technology Going South" since 2018, integrating Taiwan's disaster prevention technology, experience, resources, and knowledge to enhance disaster warning capabilities with partners in southern nations.
Recently, NSTC's National Disaster Prevention and Rescue Technology Center signed a "Seismic Alert System and Rainfall Observation Equipment Usage Agreement" with Iloilo City, Philippines, today (10th). The agreement expands the use of 24 seismic alert devices and automatic rainfall observation equipment, deepening the cooperation between both parties and jointly promoting the application of disaster risk management technology. The signing ceremony took place at Iloilo City Hall, with the Center's Director, Chen Hong-Yu, and Mayor Jerry P. Treñas signing together, witnessed by the Philippine National Resilience Disaster Committee.
The purpose of this collaboration is to strengthen Iloilo City's real-time earthquake warning and rainfall observation capabilities. The related equipment will be integrated with the city's disaster response systems, further enhancing its overall disaster monitoring and warning capabilities. The NSTC stated that Iloilo City is located on the southeast coast of Panay Island in the Philippines and is an important economic and cultural hub in the Visayas region, with a population of nearly 450,000, serving as a center for education, medical care, tourism, and finance. The city actively promotes smart city construction and disaster prevention initiatives, investing resources to build disaster response systems, and has recently been recognized as the best disaster prevention city in the Philippines.
Chen Hong-Yu emphasized that international cooperation in disaster prevention technology is not only about exchanging capabilities but also sharing responsibilities. Both the Philippines and Taiwan are located in disaster-prone areas, and through technological cooperation and tangible support, the overall disaster prevention capacity and social safety resilience of the region can be effectively enhanced. Mayor Jerry P. Treñas expressed gratitude for the long-term support from the disaster prevention technology center and stressed that this collaboration will further strengthen Iloilo City's response capabilities to earthquakes and extreme weather events. The NSTC mentioned that this signing demonstrates its determination and ability to promote international exchanges in disaster prevention technology and will continue to expand disaster prevention cooperation with Southeast Asian countries, embodying the core value that "disaster prevention technology knows no borders."
