Dayeh University Partners with Springfield College to Enhance International Education: Students Embark on Cross-Cultural Learning in the USA

To seize the last academic opportunity in their university years, Dayeh University senior students, Liao Rong-Hsuan and Chen Yi-Jie from the Department of Tourism and Leisure, recently traveled to Springfield College in the USA for a one-semester short-term study program, deeply experiencing American-style education and cultural exchange. Upon returning to Taiwan, both expressed their satisfaction, stating they gained substantial benefits, including a significant improvement in language skills, which has boosted their confidence for future career development.

Student Liao Rong-Hsuan shared that she was originally more introverted, but this study abroad experience allowed her to break through in language, thinking, and interpersonal interaction. She noted that the atmosphere in American university classrooms is vibrant, with classmates demonstrating flexible thinking and quick responses, able to express opinions instantly during discussions. "The teachers are all very patient, answering each student’s questions carefully, which motivates me to learn more," she said. This experience not only reinforced her English skills but also inspired her to pursue graduate studies and further develop her planning abilities.

Another student, Chen Yi-Jie, admitted that upon first arriving in the USA, she felt pressure due to the language barrier, but as her classroom participation and daily conversations increased, her English skills significantly improved. She highlighted that Springfield College’s curriculum emphasizes active participation and expression, with teachers frequently encouraging students to speak up rather than being passive listeners. Additionally, she joined campus club activities, played basketball with American classmates, and volunteered at a local elementary school, introducing Taiwanese culture to foster greater cultural exchange.

Assistant Professor Hsieh Pei-Ling from Dayeh University’s Department of Tourism and Leisure noted that Springfield College, established in 1885, is one of the oldest universities in the USA, renowned in the fields of health, sports, and recreation. Since 2014, Dayeh University has formed a sister-school relationship with Springfield College, promoting faculty exchanges and student exchange programs to provide diverse international learning opportunities. She emphasized that through short-term study abroad and mobile faculty programs, students can experience international classes even without going abroad, broadening their global perspective and enhancing their language skills and career competitiveness.
