BJJ Beginner Paralyzed by Black Belt Coach's Mistake Awarded $56 Million in Damages

A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) beginner in the United States was tragically paralyzed after a mishap during practice with a black belt coach, Francisco Iturralde, who incorrectly executed a movement, resulting in a crushed cervical spine. The latest court ruling awarded the student over $56 million (approximately NT$1.78 billion) in damages, shocking the BJJ community. This incident occurred five years ago when the victim, Jack Greener, was practicing at a dojo in San Diego, California. The court found that the coach and the dojo failed to properly manage risks, going beyond the reasonable risks associated with the sport. Greener is now an advocate for disabled athlete rights and has transformed his life into that of a mountaineer and motivational speaker.
