Vietnam Eases Dual Nationality Restrictions to Attract Overseas Immigrants

On July 1, Vietnam officially implemented new policies that ease nationality application and conditions for expatriates to reapply for nationality. This move aims to attract more overseas Vietnamese and high-tech talent. Minister of Justice Nguyễn Hải Ninh stated that the relaxation of these regulations is intended to create a more open and transparent environment for nationality acquisition.
The government aims to enhance the competitiveness of the AI and semiconductor industries significantly by 2030, although there have been strict restrictions on dual nationality in the past. The new law seeks not only to attract international talent and investment but also to entice overseas Vietnamese leveraging their economic strength, with hopes of bringing back funds, skills, and experience.
Many Vietnamese new residents who married in Taiwan have expressed their support for this legislation, hoping it provides clear direction for women overseas, as it would enhance their financial capacity and willingness to invest. According to 2024 statistics, there are about 6 million Vietnamese expatriates, with 80% residing in developed countries, and this year's remittance total is expected to reach $16 billion, a 32% increase compared to 2022.
